Bastard Out Of Carolina
Bastard Out Of Carolina is a short story about a young girl that stole a handful of Toostsie Rolls and got caught. She stole them from a super market. When her mama found out, she was really upset. Her mama didn’t beat her or yell at her, she gave her a lecture and she used one of her delinquent cousins as an example of what not to do. Mama gave the little girl a bunch of pennies so she could go back and pay. When Mama took the little girl back to the super market, she paid for what she stole, but the manager was sexually harassing her. The little girl was scared because the man was a pedifile and she was embarrassed to admit that she stole the candy. I think that the theme that matches this story is “Man Vs. Self”
There aren’t many themes that match this story, but one of the ones that do match is “Man Vs. Self.” I chose this theme because the little girl pretty much brought it onto herself because she shouldn’t have ever stolen the candy, she should of just asked her mom to buy it for her. That one action led to a big one. Because she stole the candy, she had to go back and pay, and since she had to go back and pay, the man was sexually harassing her. Mama was only trying to do what’s best for her because she doesn’t want to raise a bad child. She’s lucky that her mama didn’t send her to pick strawberries like she said her own mama used to make her do.
The little girl made the wrong decision to steal the candy. One bad decision led to a conflict. Since she chose to steal the candy, she had to pay for the candy and she was sexually harassed. Mama didn’t yell at her, she didn’t hit her, and she’s lucky she didn’t send her to go strawberry picking like her mama used to make her do. The little girl brought this n to herself, that’s why I chose the theme “Man Vs. Self.”
The Tell-Tale Heart
The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is a suspense filled story that keeps you wanting to read more. In the story, A crazy man can’t clear his conscience from committing murder. He feels like the eyes of the corpse’s yes were watching him and he couldn’t bare it. He kept hearing groans and moans, yet nobody else was in the house with him. He felt mortal terror. Even after he buried the body under the floor boards, he still heard the heart beats. He couldn’t take it any longer. Edgar Allan Poe uses many details that make you more interested in the story. I think that theme that matches this story is “Man Vs. Self” because he made the choice to commit the murder, so his conscience ate him alive. Karma struck back, what goes around, comes around.
He doesn’t know why he killed the eldery man. “I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture --a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees --very gradually --I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” That quote was from the second paragraph. I included that quote because that shows that he didn’t know why he killed the man, he felt an urge, so he used his eyes as an excuse. “Madmen know nothing.” This quote was from the third paragraph. I chose this quote because it shows that he is a cray person, so that’s what helps build up to the rising action. Both of those quotes helped prove that the theme that matched the story best is “Man Vs. Self.”
The Tell-Tale Heart was an awesome story that keeps people wanting to read more. The theme that matches the story best is “Man Vs. Self.” Edgar Allan Poe is a great author. “I smiled, --for what had I to fear?” -Edger Allan Poe 1843 :)
